IL-4RA gene expression in PBMC with regard to place of living and atopy status

Abstract: The regulation of IL-4RA gene expression is complex and probably influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, such as farming exposures, which could provide the counterbalance to atopy.

“…Although the results were not statistically significant, they may suggest an environment-related regulatory mechanism connected with rural living. 13 The aim of the current study was to determine whether the most important and well-studied SNPs within the IL4RA gene are responsible for the different patterns of gene expression. We observed no significant differences in expression profile according to genotype within the different models.…”

“…The methods for relative gene expression using realtime quantitative polymerase chain reaction RT-qPCR) and the characteristics of the study group have already been described in detail. 13 We used the expression data from the subjects enrolled in our previous study and performed genotyping for ILR4A polymorphisms. In the current analysis, 36 subjects with available data were enrolled, 18 of whom were atopic.…”

“…Conversely, plasma levels of the chemoattractant C-C motif chemokine (CCL) 11 have been shown to be lower in urban, compared to rural dwellers in a study investigating the effect of CCL on cognitive function 12 . Among individuals with atopy, urban inhabitants had higher levels of gene expression for IL-4R, a type 2 cytokine receptor, compared with rural inhabitants 13 . In another study in Ghana, urban children had increased gene expression of IL-10 compared with rural children, irrespective of helminth infection status 14 .…”
