III. Albendazole in the treatment of inoperable hydatid disease in Kenya—a report on 12 cases

Abstract: The results of treatment of 12 cases of inoperable hydatid disease in Kenya using albendazole at a dose of 10 mg/kg body-weight for eight weeks are reported. In all the cases there was marked regression and collapse of the cysts but a further four weeks course of treatment at a higher dose of 15 mg/kg was given to two cases because they both still had a large number of demonstrable cysts on ultrasonography at eight weeks. No side effects of the drug were noted. Albendazole is likely to play an important role i… Show more

“…In the present study, the timing of lung-cyst rupture varied considerably, from just 10 days to 2 months after the initiation of treatment (Table 3). The timing of some lung-cyst changes was noted, in passing, by other researchers investigating the effects of MBZ (Kern et al, 1979;Shivashankar et al, 1982) or ABZ (Okelo, 1986).…”

“…Surgery remains the treatment of choice. [102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113] Since pulmonary cysts of the sylvatic type have a propensity to spontaneous rupture and superinfection, they should be excised (or sterilized and drained) even when the host is asymptomatic. A careful search for hepatic lesions should be made prior to surgery because many patients will have subdiaphragmatic hydatids that can be approached through the same thoracotomy.…”

“…A number of studies have looked at the suitability of treating inoperable echinococciasis with anthelmintics. [110][111][112][113] Despite praziquantel's documented scolicidal activity, it is still not known if it is lethal to germinal layer cells. 107 For that reason clinical studies have focused on the benzimidazole carbamates: mebendazole, albendazole, and flubendazole.…”
