IHC Profiler: An Open Source Plugin for the Quantitative Evaluation and Automated Scoring of Immunohistochemistry Images of Human Tissue Samples

Abstract: In anatomic pathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) serves as a diagnostic and prognostic method for identification of disease markers in tissue samples that directly influences classification and grading the disease, influencing patient management. However, till today over most of the world, pathological analysis of tissue samples remained a time-consuming and subjective procedure, wherein the intensity of antibody staining is manually judged and thus scoring decision is directly influenced by visual bias. This… Show more

“…Thus far, a number of these techniques have been applied to the study of tumor pathological features in cancer samples, leading to significant findings. 7,[19][20][21][22] However, the considerable cost of commercial software may prohibit independent studies from evaluating their performance and reproducing their results. On the other hand, the availability and maintenance of non-commercial software in research papers is not always ensured.…”

“…After histopathological evaluation, each slide was divided into 3 areas: a cancer cell zone, a transient zone (adjacent to the neoplasm, including the infiltration areas), and a normal endometrium zone (clearly distinguishable from the cancer cells). The quantitative analysis of deconvoluted DAB pixel intensity was performed separately in each of the three zones using the IHC Profiler plugin for ImageJ (26).…”
