Ignored Racism

Abstract: This book is about how White Americans uniquely express racial-ethnic animus toward Latinos and how this often-ignored form of racial-ethnic hostility shapes their support for policies that adversely impact Latino communities. Its key argument is that the racialization of Latinos has created a belief system among some Whites that mixes attributes of race-ethnicity with race-neutral behaviors. This allows Whites to express animus toward Latinos in a race-neutral manner by blurring the lines between dislike towa… Show more

“…Unlike in previous moments like these, some individuals within the White community are actively listening, reflecting, and readjusting their attitudes and behaviors toward Blacks and other groups (Del Real, Samuels, and Craig 2020; Knowles and Lowery 2012), with some of these individuals openly expressing sympathy for (Chudy 2020, 2017), rather than antipathy against, various communities of color (cf. Kinder and Kam 2009; Kinder and Sanders 1996; Ramirez and Peterson 2020). Let that sink in for a minute: some White individuals are now genuinely expressing sympathy for outgroups, with these sentiments bearing on how White Americans behave politically (Chudy 2020).…”

“…The influence of outgroup animus on White political attitudes in the United States has long been recognized, although the salience of different group attitudes has varied over time. Early work focused on anti‐Black attitudes (Du Bois, 1899; Myrdal, 1944) and racial resentment (e.g., Smith et al., 2020; Stephens‐Dougan, 2016; Tesler & Sears, 2010; Valentino et al., 2002), although increasingly research has also pointed to the unique importance of anti‐Latino and anti‐immigrant attitudes (Abrajano & Hajnal, 2017; Buyuker et al., 2021; Enns & Jardina, 2021; Hajnal & Rivera, 2014; Hooghe & Dassonneville, 2018; Ramirez & Peterson, 2020).…”
