Ignition Quality Tester (IQT) Investigation of the Negative Temperature Coefficient Region of Alkane Autoignition

Abstract: The negative temperature coefficient (NTC) region of alkane autoignition was observed for the first time in the Ignition Quality Tester (IQT). The C 7 isomers studied included n-heptane, 3-ethylpentane, 2,4-dimethylpentane, 2,3dimethylpentane, and 2,2,3-trimethylbutane. The temperatures of the fuel−air mixture ranged from 650 to 1023 K with pressures of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 MPa at equivalence ratios between 0.8 and 1.0. The longer autoignition times of increasingly branched isomers allowed the reacting mixtures s… Show more

“…The mass of fuel injected was then held constant for each temperature sweep, and consequently the equivalence ratio of the combustion events decreased as the combustion chamber cooled. Other studies comparing constant mass to constant equivalence ratio temperature sweeps have shown that the effects of this change in equivalence ratio on ID measurements are small [64][65][66].…”

“…Bogin et al have modified the IQT controls and operating parameters for use in more fundamental ignition delay and kinetic mechanism validation studies [63][64][65]. The authors observed that for a sufficiently long auto-ignition delay time (ID) (e.g., >40 ms), the mixture conditions are nearly homogeneous in nature.…”

“…The first thermocouple measures the charge temperature close by the injector nozzle, the second thermocouple is 7 cm downstream from the first one. The temperature gradient increases approximately 40 °C from the first to the second thermocouple [22,35]. The local area where combustion starts in the IQT is close to the pressure transducer [35].…”

“…SOC in ASTM D6890 is defined as the time when the pressure in the chamber reaches 138 kPa above the initial chamber pressure. This point is considered to be the "combustion recovery point" [29,[33][34][35]. A schematic of IQT along with a list of parameters and running conditions are given in Figure 2.…”
