Ignition Quality of Biodiesel from Cottonseed and Soybean Oil

Abstract: The thermal analysis has been employed to yield information on the biodiesel ignition quality since the ignition quality influences the combustion and exhaust emissions of the fuels in a compression ignition (CI) engine. The chemical compositions of -10 petrodiesel (-10PD), soybean-based biodiesel (SME) and cottonseed-based biodiesel (CME) are analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Ignition temperature of -10PD, SME and CME is determined by thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry … Show more

“…The NOx emissions are explicitly proportional to the growing chain span of monosaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), according to Satpathy et al 13 They also discovered that HC and CO emission levels increase as chain length increases. The authors 10 believe that relatively short-chain FAME is favorable in aspects of emissions regulations. Various techniques, including the use of metal fillers, can reduce the proportion of NOx emissions.…”

“…8 A multitude of research findings has demonstrated that using biofuel in diesel engines significantly reduces ejected exhaust emissions due to the fuel's high oxygen level. 9,10 On the other hand, multiple studies have revealed that NOx emissions increase when a diesel engine runs on biodiesel. Carbonyl group content, heating value, and biodiesel concentration are the causes of the increase in NOx emissions.…”

“…21 Lai et al have shown that the SME ignition quality is superior because of the presence of saturated bonds and short-length carbon chains. 22 In the present study, a soy methyl ester (SME) was blended with MO to investigate the engine performance and emission characteristics. The SME and its blends were also characterized using different techniques such as FTIR, UV and NMR spectroscopies.…”
