IgE reactivity to fish allergens in Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) in atopic dogs

Abstract: Background: IgE reactivity to fish allergens in atopic dogs, which are used as models for food allergy, has not been elucidated to date. We investigated IgE reactivity to crude extracts and purified Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) allergens in atopic dogs to identify the allergenic proteins of cod. Methods: Specific IgE to crude cod extracts in the sera of 179 atopic dogs, including 27 dogs with cod allergy, were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The allergens of crude cod extracts wer… Show more

“…The grocery store or the surrounding environment might be the source of these allergies [25]. In this study, 84 % were attributable to tuna, mackerel, and codfish allergies as well as in previous studies [26,27], seafood and animals are substantial sources of allergens for dogs. Interestingly, crab/shrimp is unlikely to cause allergies (Figure 5).…”

“…Finally, we calculated A-RISC indices for the two chains of TPM, a well-known panallergen for humans and a recently found fish allergen in dogs. 8 As can be seen in Figure S1, the high-value indices suggested a substantial risk of cross-reactivity between mammal, poultry and fish TPMs. This risk also was important between the TPMs of these species and two inhalant allergens, Bla g 7 and Der f 10, the latter being a minor mite allergen for dogs.…”

[11][12][13][14][15][16] Of all the allergens identified in the references above, only bovine serum albumin (ALB, Bos d 6) and three egg white proteins [ovomucoid (Gal d 1), ovalbumin (Gal d 2) and ovotransferrin (Gal d 3)] were identified in the serum isolated from a small number of dogs with food allergies proven by a positive oral challenge. Thus, there is a need to expand both this list of molecularly characterised food allergens and the number of sera collected from dogs with provocation-proven food allergies.…”
