IFN-λ resolves inflammation via suppression of neutrophil infiltration and IL-1β production

Abstract: Blazek et al. demonstrate that treatment with IL-28A reduces inflammation in collagen-induced arthritis by restricting the recruitment of IL-1β+ neutrophils.

“…These results suggest that lower levels of IL-22 in the uterine decidua in patients with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss may contribute to a disruption of decidual homeostasis and ultimately lead to early pregnancy loss. In relation to IL-28A, it has been reported that the administration of IL-28A completely reverses the development of collagen-induced arthritis in a murine model, supporting also its possible anti-inflammatory function [36] . In this sense, from our results, it can be suggested that IL-20, IL-22, and IL-28A have potential anti-inflammatory and protective effects during pregnancy which could be abrogated at the onset of labor.…”

“…Each of these cell types has been shown to express both uPA and uPAR, 19,[44][45][46][47] and each has been linked to arthritis pathogenesis in both RA and CIA. 20,33,[48][49][50][51] Whether uPA/uPAR-dependent mechanisms of arthritis pathogenesis occur through multiple hematopoietic cell types and whether these mechanisms require uPA production by one cell type and uPAR expression by another remain to be determined.…”

“…Dickensheets and colleagues could not find IFNk induced ISG expression in lymphocytes or monocytes [22], two cell types that are central for regulating anti-HCV immune responses or for exerting antiviral effector mechanisms. More recently, Blazek and colleagues identified neutrophils as IFNk responsive regulators of Th17 and cd T cells in a mouse collagen-induced arthritis model [23]. It remains to be clarified if neutrophils could also be involved in a similar cell-cell network during AHC.…”
