IFC-Based Framework for Evaluating Total Performance of Building Envelopes

Abstract: Evaluating the overall performance of buildings has emerged as a trend in building engineering in recent years. Several programs that evaluate building performance have been developed or are being developed in different regions of the world. The Building Envelope Performance Assessment Tool (BEPAT) was initiated at Concordia University based on the feedback received from manufacturers. After briefly introducing the development of the tool, this paper presents an integrated framework which applies Information T… Show more

“…While earlier versions of BIM only provided tools for design and construction, the management of design and construction processes for modern projects has become more critical due to the advent of digital transmission. Thus more owners, engineering companies, builders, and subcontractors are now choosing BIM as a tool for design and coordination (Fazio et al, 2007;Arayici et al, 2011;Rüppel and Schatz, 2011;Ilozor anf Kelly, 2012).…”

“…Nevertheless, another problem arose that despite various simulation applications are available for analysis, data input from CAD drawings cannot be efficiently and precisely read by those applications. To solve this problem, Fazio et al [3] designed an IFC-based framework for implementing the performance evaluation protocol. To refine the IFC instance files, Ying and Lee [4] proposed a rule-based automatic checking approach dedicated to the validation of IFC 2nd level-proper space boundaries for energy analysis.…”

“…In several countries (Japan, United States, Canada, EU countries, etc.) such programs have been or are being developed in an attempt to assess the issues that influence the performance of the building [10]. The goal of BPE (Building Performance Evaluation) is to improve the quality of decisions made at every phase of the building life cycle, that is, from strategic planning to programming, design, and construction, all the way to facility management [11].…”
