“If you could just see me”: The construction of heterosexual men’s sexual selves and the hierarchy of desirability

Abstract: Part of identity development involves the construction of a sexual self. Sexual selves are constructed based on interactions with others. Based on in-depth interviews with 59 heterosexual men between the ages of 30 and 59, I look at the way research participants defined heterosexual men’s desirability through their framing of their sexual selves. I show how participants’ stories revealed a link between desirability and masculinity for heterosexual men in U.S. culture. Moreover, I find that consistent … Show more

“…As Jones (2015) has argued, the ubiquity in digital culture of on-going self-measurement and auto-diagnosis constitutes the “entextualization of the self,” which works to increase a sense of agency through building a narrative where the individual is the hero of their own story. Self-Masters are also clearly jockeying for their position in the masculine hierarchy through specific “evidentiary stories” (Montemurro 2020). The role that NoFap plays for the Self-Master is a strong form of the transmutation thesis.…”

“…Thus, two of the three female guest pickers between 2015-2019 functioned as symbols of male heterosexuality and masculine hegemony, which is important not only in the context of hegemonic masculinity, but for heterosexual men's sense of selves. According to Montemurro (2021), heterosexual men perform their heterosexuality in a variety of ways, including through the construction of their "sexual selves that [meet] (or failed to meet) dominant narratives of hetero-masculine desirability" (p. 304). This sense of sexual selfhood comes through a variety of reinforcements, including a constant demonstration of heterosexuality and evidentiary stories of successful heterosexual relationships and sexual encounters, both of which operate against the backdrop of culturally-sanctioned hegemonic masculinity.…”

“…hegemonic masculinity, in particular, proffers a heteromasculine ideal of men's sexual prowess based on virility and skilled performance. Montemurro (2021) found that being able to satisfy a woman's sexual appetites and desiresespecially by "giving" orgasms-was high on the list. however, the same heteromasculinity contributes to a "phallocentric imperative" that undermines women's claims to clitoral stimulation (Wade, Kremer, and Brown 2005;Willis et al 2018).…”
