Idiosyncratic reactions are the most common cause of abnormal liver function tests in patients with cystic fibrosis

Abstract: Elevated LFT are common during IV antibiotic treatment in CF. Although specific antibiotic exposure may contribute to abnormal LFT in a minority of cases, our study demonstrates that antibiotic-induced liver injury is largely idiosyncratic and unpredictable.

“…19 One possible explanation for this finding is that recurrent AEs are less frequently captured over longer-term treatment. PwCF experience elevations in transaminase levels due to underlying hepatic disease and treatment with concomitant medications, including antibiotics [32][33][34] ; the transaminase data in study 661-110 were generally consistent with previous experience with TEZ/IVA and background transaminase elevations occurring in pwCF. 20,21 Consistent with the PBO-controlled parent studies, there was no evidence of an increased incidence of respiratory TEAEs associated with extended TEZ/IVA treatment.…”

“…This Australian study2 aimed to identify risk factors for elevated liver function tests (LFTs) in patients with CF receiving parenteral antibiotics. All patients attending the Prince Charles Hospital Adult CF Centre in 2012 were identified using the CF research database and CF data registry.…”
