Idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract: Scoliosis refers to curves exceeding 10 degrees observed through posterioanterior direct radiography. In fact, the diagnosis for idiopathic scoliosis is accepted to exclude already available causes. The aim of this paper was to review the etiopathogenesis, classification systems and the treatment management of idiopathic scoliosis. A search in the National Library of Medicine (Pubmed) database using the key words 'idiopathic' and 'scoliosis' was performed. For the literature review, papers concerning the etiop… Show more

“…Although many theories have been suggested, the etiology of idiopathic scoliosis remains unsolved; however, the role of genetic factors in the initiation and progression of the disease has been widely discussed. 29,30 The search for genetic risk factors is important from a clinical standpoint as we lack reliable diagnostic markers to predict IS presence, curve progression or joint mobility in the disease development. Such a prediction factor could lead to effective non-surgical treatment as well as aid early surgical intervention decision-making process.…”
