Idiopathic fibrous mediastinitis with refractory pleural effusion: a case report and literature review

Abstract: Fibrous mediastinitis is a rare progressive disease characterized by invasive proliferation of fibrous tissue in the mediastinum. This tissue proliferation leads to compression of the mediastinal structures in the thoracic cavity, including the pulmonary vessels, esophagus, and trachea, causing corresponding symptoms and complications such as pulmonary hypertension. In clinical practice, the diagnosis of fibrous mediastinitis is often delayed or missed because of the rarity and variable clinical manifestations… Show more

“…[32] FM is a rare condition characterized by proliferation of fibrous tissue in the mediastinum; this leads to pulmonary vascular stenosis owing to wrapping, infiltration, and compression, mostly involving the proximal pulmonary artery. [8,33] PPS typically presents as stenosis, or obstruction a segment of the pulmonary artery tree, and is a congenital or acquired disease. [10,11,34]…”

“…Fibrosing mediastinitis (FM), also known as sclerosing mediastinitis, is a benign proliferative disease of fibrous tissues within the mediastinum . Of note, FM can lead to pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is attributed to the wrapping, infiltration, and constriction of large blood vessels and bronchi in terms of mechanisms.…”

“…Fibrosing mediastinitis (FM), also known as sclerosing mediastinitis, is a benign proliferative disease of fibrous tissues within the mediastinum. 1 Of note, FM can lead to pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is attributed to the wrapping, infiltration, and constriction of large blood vessels and bronchi in terms of mechanisms. Importantly, PH has been considered as a major cause of death for FM patients, which is a rare subcategory of PH, and draws more attention from researchers thereby.…”
