Idiopathic Acquired Osteosclerosis in a Middle-Aged Woman With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract: Widely distributed osteosclerosis is an unusual radiographic finding with multiple causes. A 42-year-old premenopausal Spanish woman gradually acquired dense bone diffusely affecting her axial skeleton and focally affecting her proximal long bones. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) diagnosed in adolescence had been well controlled. She had not fractured or received antiresorptive therapy, and she was hepatitis C virus antibody negative. Family members had low bone mass. Lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD)… Show more

“…Serum multiplex biomarker profiling (SMBP) was performed in 2013 in one comprehensive “batch” assay at Amgen, Inc. (Thousand Oaks, CA, USA) using our published methodology (20–22) and fasting serum acquired from the patient in 2011 and from 20 healthy children (6 boys and 14 girls) obtained in St. Louis, MO, USA in 2012 (Supporting Appendix).…”

“…[19][20][21][22][23][24] Generalized osteosclerosis with increased BDM can occur in skeletal dysplasia, infectious or neoplastic diseases. [25] In osteopetrosis (OPT), increased BMD results from impaired Oc activity, sometimes due to decreased number of these cells. An OPT bone phenotype was described in 2001 by Döffinger et al [19] in two brothers with an IKBKG missense mutation and generalized osteosclerosis, and that same year bone fractures were reported in a two-year-old boy with a nonsense IKBKG mutation.…”

“…So a new Ph-responsive antibacterial coating was prepared using layer by layer assembly technology in this experiment. Tannic acid (TA) is a natural phenolic hydroxyl molecule that has high ROS scavenging ability and biocompatibility as well as the possibility of being functionalized 42 . As an aminoglycoside antibiotic, gentamicin is commonly used for the treatment of Gram-positive and Gram-negative infections 43 .…”
