Identity issues surrounding American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and an optimised high performance liquid chromatography method to authenticate commercially available products

“…We therefore conducted High Performance Liquid Chromatography on the batch and a voucher specimen from the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia® to compare phytochemical profiles and to qualify and quantify baicalin, baicalein and wogonin, some of its predominant flavonoids (Upton and Dayu, 2012). The phytochemical profile of the freeze-dried sample was consistent with that of the S. lateriflora reference material and was found to be unadulterated (verbascoside, which is found in Teucrium but not S. lateriflora was not detected) and of suitable quality for the study; containing a high quantity of baicalin (Wohlmuth et al, 2009) at 11.71 ± 1.16 mg/g and 7.67 ± 0.89 mg/g and 0.65 ± 0.06 mg/g of, baicalein and wogonin, respectively (Brock et al, 2013). Freezedried stinging nettle leaf (Urtica dioica folia) capsules (300 mg) was the placebo of choice as it has no known effects on the CNS and is similar in appearance, taste and smell to the skullcap capsules.…”
