Identity and collective action among European Kurds

Abstract: This research investigated the role of group-based anger and efficacy in explaining the effects of subgroup (ethnic) and common (European) identity on collective action among Kurds in Europe responding to different types of disadvantage. Whereas stronger Kurdish identity positively predicted intentions for collective action (mediated by anger and efficacy), stronger common ingroup identity was negatively related to collective action intentions. This effect occurred primarily when structural disadvantage was sa… Show more

“…While promoting positive intergroup attitudes, intergroup contact can enhance (inaccurate) expectations that the disadvantaged group will be treated fairly by the advantaged group (Saguy et al, ), promote a common ingroup identity (Gaertner & Dovidio, ) reduce anger toward the outgroup (Tausch, Saguay, & Bryson, ) and reduce perceptions of discrimination (Dixon, Tropp et al, ). All of these outcomes can reduce perceptions of group inequality and hence reduce motivation to challenge group inequality (Dixon et al, ; Saguy et al, ; Ufkes, Calcagno, Glasford & Dovidio, ; Ufkes, Dovidio & Tel, ; van Zomeren, Postmes, & Spears, ).…”

“…In the United States, identifying as American as opposed to White American reduced recognition of discrimination against African Americans and willingness to protest in favor of African Americans (Banfield & Dovidio, 2013). In the European context, identifying as European negatively predicted willingness to protest among the disadvantaged Kurds by reducing anger whereas identification with the Kurdish ingroup predicted stronger willingness to engage in protest behavior via anger and group efficacy (Ufkes, Dovidio, & Tel, 2014).…”

“…Recent research on activism argues that past participation in political action or even civic participation could influence future activism (van Stekelenburg, Klandermans, & Akkerman, 2016). In a similar vein, DDPMAC hypothesizes that both emotion-focused and problem-focused pathway are influenced by past participation in political action.…”
