Identifying sustainable forest management research narratives: a text mining approach

Abstract: Although it is obvious that research regarding Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is context specific and developed over time, not many research papers yet intended to investigate these changes. As a matter of fact, the number of scientific publications addressing SFM is relatively high. Hence, such a wide field cannot be sufficiently covered by traditional literature review approaches. With this paper, we aim at identifying the most convergent narratives within the SFMresearch landscape by applying a text mi… Show more

“…Table 6 reveals that, although a 1% increase in energy consumption increases the EFP by 47%, energy consumption’s contribution to economic growth is much higher (78%). Therefore, we suggest that the governments of IEA countries increase energy consumption to increase economic growth but emphasize the uses of renewable energy to protect the environmental quality (Schober et al 2018 ; Zafar et al 2019 ). Energy consumption from renewable sources plays an active role in reducing energy poverty and dependence on foreign-produced energy while ensuring energy efficacy.…”

“…On the question of mitigation and adaptation, a systematic review can enable climate political researchers to neatly summarize the recent studies and approaches which can provide challenges for the future. Herefor and in line with the recommendations of Schober et al (2018), the list for a systematic review analysis is generated using a keyword search under TOPIC in the database ISI Web of Science. The terms applied for the keyword search are as follows: "climate" AND "change" AND "adapt*" AND "mitigat*" AND ("synerg*" OR "trade-off" OR "tradeoff").…”

“…Therefore, we recommend further studies to determine how to systematize the sustainable forest management while maintatining a substantial amount of natural and primary forests, and simultaneously managing the unused forest resources without overexploitation. Adding more items to these types of studies as outlined in Schober et al (2018), especially in the social context of other countries, may increase complexity and ask for additional analysis tools to deal with wicked problems in varying biomes, energy systems, and social preferences. Forest management in terms of conducting thinning and prunning requires a new way to utilize the unused forest resources, which can enhance carbon sequestration at optimum stand ages (Oliver et al, 2014).…”

“…This literature's sheer size and heterogeneity make a comprehensive review of all existing contributions quite a daunting task. The literature has faced this challenge by making increasing use of computer-assisted analysis to substitute or complement traditional systematic review methodologies, with the double benefit of allowing to embrace larger number and variety of publications and help to avoid subjective biases and to achieve rigorous, timely processing and examination of key contents (Billi, Mascareño & Edwards, 2021;D'Amato, 2018;Schober et al, 2018).…”
