Identifying predictors of patient safety competency based on sleep quality in students of school of nursing and midwifery: A multidisciplinary study

Abstract

Background: Patient Safety (PS) is a critical healthcare service issue. Sleep disorders not only cause health problems for nursing students but also lead to decreased performance and increased incidence of medication errors, which can endanger patient safety. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the predictors of Patient Safety Competency (PSC) based on the sleep quality of nursing students. Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 331 Ardabil School of Nursing and Midwifery students. The participants were selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic information form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSS). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Results: The nurses’ patient safety competency in the classroom and clinical settings was at an average level. Teamwork with other healthcare professionals scored the lowest. Also, sleep quality dimensions were predictors of PSC in nursing students. Conclusion: Most nursing students typically have an average PSC, and there is a clear positive correlation between sleep quality and PSC. Therefore, it becomes imperative to identify the key factors that directly impact PSC. Armed with this knowledge, the managers of the Nursing and Midwifery School can proactively take measures to enhance both the classroom and clinical environments. Furthermore, organizing informative and engaging sleep quality workshops can significantly improve patient care quality.
