The objective of this work was to select cowpea lines with compound inflorescences that show a high potential to generate the first commercial cultivar with this characteristic in Brazil. Thirty-seven lines were evaluated in a randomized complete block design, with two replicates, in 2021, in the municipality of Teresina, in the state of Piauí. The following traits were evaluated: number of days to the onset of flowering, plant size, commercial grain quality, number of grains per pod, weight of 100 grains, and grain yield. Deviance analyzes were performed by the restricted maximum likelihood/ best unbiased linear predictor methodology, and the values and genetic parameters necessary to carry out simultaneous selection were estimated based on the rank sum index. A statistical difference was detected between the lines evaluated by the likelihood ratio test (LRT). In general, genetic variance was the largest component of phenotypic variance for the evaluated traits. The ten most promising cowpea lines with compound inflorescences are: MNC15-33E-123, MNC15-33E-178, MNC15-33E-222, MNC15-33E-171, MNC15-33E-232, MNC15-33E-223, MNC15-33E-219, MNC15-33E-183, MNC15-33E-91, and MNC15-33E-165. These lines were selected for the next selection stages and show a high potential to generate the first commercial cowpea cultivar with compound inflorescences in Brazil.

This work was carried out to evaluate adaptability and stability, agronomic performance, and phenotypic correlation between the characters of erect/semi-erect cowpea lines in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The trials were conducted in the municipalities of Nova Ubiratã-MT, Primavera do Leste-MT and Sinop-MT in 2014 and 2015. A total of 15 lines and five commercial controls were evaluated using a randomized complete block design (RBD) with four replications. Cultivation value, plant lodging, pod mass, pod length, number of grains per pod, grain mass, mass of 100 grains, grain index and grain yield were evaluated. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and yield adaptability and stability were estimated. Phenotypic correlations among characters were also estimated. The L22, L24, L25, L27, L31, L34 and L35 lines presented good performance for the evaluated characters and good yield adaptability and stability. Estimates of phenotypic correlations indicated that upright plants with smaller lodging presented smaller and lighter pods, with fewer grains per pod and heavier grains.

Weeds negatively affect cowpea plants, causing reduced growth, delayed development and yield loss. The aim of this study was to assay selectivity and effectiveness of weed control herbicides in cowpea cropping field conditions. For selectivity evaluation, the herbicide S-metolachlor, was used pre-emergence (PRE), and carfentrazone-ethyl, clethodim, fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, fluazifop-p-butyl and quizalofop-p-ethyl post-emergence (POST). In effectiveness evaluation, S-metolachlor (PRE), and carfentrazone-ethyl (POST), S-metolachlor in PRE and fluazifop-p-butyl (POST), clethodim, carfentrazone-ethyl and clethodim, fenoxapropp- ethyl, carfentrazone-ethyl and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, fluazifop-p-butyl, carfentrazone-ethyl and fluazifop-pbutyl, quizalofop-p-ethyl and carfentrazone-ethyl and quizalofop-p-ethyl (POST). Two controls were included, one with weeding at 15 and 35 days after sowing (DAS) and the other without weed control. Carfentrazone-ethyl caused mild phytotoxicity in plants seven days after application, but did not reduce yield (2337 kg ha-1). The levels of weed control and productivity obtained with S-metolachlor alone or in association with carfentrazoneethyl or fluazifop-p-butyl, associated or not with carfentrazone-ethyl, were similar to those obtained with weeds. Spraying with carfentrazone-ethyl alone resulted in low control effectiveness and reduced yield (1511 kg ha-1). Weed interference during the crop cycle reduced yield by 77% (531 kg ha-1). The selectivity and effectiveness obtained with the herbicides should be considered as an agronomic and economically-viable.
