Identifying Inefficient Drilling Conditions Using Drilling-Specific Energy

Abstract: A novel correlation identifying inefficient drilling conditions is presented using experimental and field data. Historically, Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) has been used to improve the drilling performance with mixed results. Drilling Specific Energy (DSE) is the amount of energy required to destroy and remove underneath the bit a unit volume of rock. DSE includes axial, torsional and hydraulic energy. DSE is different than MSE because it includes a hydraulic term. The initial MSE correlation (Teale, 1964) … Show more

“…MSE, MSE adj and Drilling Specific Energy (DSE) are also useful for monitoring drilling efficiency, as has been reported by a number of authors (Pessier, et al, 1992;Armenta, 2008). Figure 7 provides a compelling example of how MSE adj changes with both rock strength and dull condition.…”

“…In 2008, Armenta [2] proposed DSE as a modified MSE to correct higher values of MSE by adding a bit hydraulic term. DSE can be expressed as the total work input to drill and remove a unit volume of the rock from underneath the bit.…”
