Identifying Hypoxia Characteristics to Stratify Prognosis and Assess the Tumor Immune Microenvironment in Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common malignant tumor worldwide, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are a new therapeutic option for metastatic RCC. Infiltrating immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) play a critical part in RCC biology, which is important for tumor therapy and prediction. Hypoxia is a common condition that occurs in the TME and may lead to RCC immunosuppression and immune escape. This study was conducted to analyze the extent of the hypoxia immune microenvironment in the … Show more

“…Based on previous studies ( 12 , 13 ), we found 342 hypoxia-related genes ( Supplementary Table S3 ). In total, 83.6% (286 / 342) of hypoxia-related genes were differentially expressed in tumor tissue and adjacent tissue.…”

“…By exploring the OS outcomes of patients with different hypoxia and immune status, we found that the high-hypoxia-status samples and low-immune-status samples tend to induce a poor OS outcome, which is consistent with other studies. The hypoxia and immune microenvironment play a critical role in the progression of KIRC ( Zhang et al, 2021 ). Von Hippel Lindau tumor suppressor (pVHL) and HIFs are critical factors in hypoxia-related pathways.…”

“…In a study that integrated 11 independent HCC cohorts, not a single immune cell population could be significantly differentiated in a consistent manner between the low-risk and high-risk groups, highlighting the complexity of the factors determining immune cell infiltration ( 194 ). It is difficult to make any conclusion on the findings in renal cell carcinoma, as all three studies included a single cohort respectively and reported distinct findings ( 232 234 ) ( Table 1 ).…”
