Identifying Host Molecular Features Strongly Linked With Responses to Huanglongbing Disease in Citrus Leaves

Abstract: A bioinformatic analysis of previously published RNA-Seq studies on Huanglongbing (HLB) response and tolerance in leaf tissues was performed. The aim was to identify genes commonly modulated between studies and genes, pathways and gene set categories strongly associated with this devastating Citrus disease. Bioinformatic analysis of expression data of four datasets present in NCBI provided 46–68 million reads with an alignment percentage of 72.95–86.76%. Only 16 HLB-regulated genes were commonly identified bet… Show more

“…To assist the biomarkers discovery, the vast amount of transcriptomic data available in public databases in response to human coronaviruses will allow a deep meta‐analysis using previously customized bioinformatics pipelines Ref. [8–11]. This work consists of re‐analyzing raw data obtained by independent experiments using a normalization and standardization procedure included in a bioinformatics pipeline.…”

“…Although we have previously reported expression of pectinases in leaves (Verma et al ., ), and other groups reported microbial diseases associated with release of pectinase (Ballan et al ., ; Shirsath et al ., ), no leaf‐made enzyme product has been launched commercially nor validated with commercial microbial enzyme products. Almost all genetically modified (GM) products are derived from seeds.…”

“…Citrus undergoing thermotherapy to treat HLB exhibited increased peroxidase accumulation (99). Additionally, bioinformatic analyses comparing four RNA-seq studies on HLB illustrated that tolerance is linked with the induction of redox-related genes involved in both young and mature leaf tissues (100). These studies indicate the importance of regulating the opposing roles of redox during CLas infection.…”
