Identifying Geomorphological Changes of Coastal Cliffs through Point Cloud Registration from UAV Images

Abstract: Cliff monitoring is essential to stakeholders for their decision-making in maintaining a healthy coastal environment. Recently, photogrammetry-based technology has shown great successes in cliff monitoring. However, many methods to date require georeferencing efforts by either measuring geographic coordinates of the ground control points (GCPs) or using global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), significantly increasing the implementation costs. In this study, we propose… Show more

“…To fulfill this need, cloud-to-cloud (C2C) distances are computed to uncover differential features of the physical entity over time. Computing C2C distances is commonly used in remote sensing (Kong, 2021;Alazmi and Seo, 2023). Lastly, identifying changes over time also requires comparing two point cloud datasets at different inspections.…”

“…Kong [14] proposes a new methodology for cliff monitoring that does not require georeferencing efforts, making it a cost-effective solution. The proposed approach aligns 3D point clouds of the cliff from different periods into the same coordinate system using a rigid registration protocol.…”

“…As UAVs and their related technologies continue to develop, more and more UAVs are being used in recent years. The quadrotor is widely used in all aspects of life by virtue of its advantages of compactness and flexibility and low requirements for takeoff sites, such as aerial photography quadrotor UAVs in life and electric power inspection quadrotor UAVs and so on [1][2]. The unmanned aircraft manipulated by using radio remote control equipment and self-contained program control devices is called UAV, which is capable of performing various complex and difficult tasks.…”
