Identifying factors that increase the likelihood of driving after drinking among college students

Abstract: Driving after drinking (DAD) is a serious public health concern found to be more common among college students than those of other age groups or same-aged non-college peers. The current study examined potential predictors of DAD among a dual-site sample of 3,753 (65% female, 58% Caucasian) college students. Results showed that 19.1% of respondents had driven after 3 or more drinks and 8.6% had driven after 5 or more drinks in the past three months. A logistic regression model showed that male status, fraternit… Show more

“…These fi ndings support our hypothesis that teenage substance use, particularly heavy episodic drinking, is a prospective predictor of DWI and RWI, which has previously been found in cross-sectional research (LaBrie et al, 2011;Li et al, 2013;Shope et al, 2003;Shults et al, 2009). To extend prior research on the relationship between parenting practices and risky driving (Bingham et al, 2004;Hartos et al, 2000Hartos et al, , 2002Shope et al, 2001), the current study also explored the longitudinal association between parenting practices and DWI/RWI.…”

“…A growing number of studies have examined predictors of teenage DWI and RWI. The most consistent predictor of DWI in studies with adolescent samples, as well as young adult and adult samples, is problem drinking, including heavy alcohol use and drinking-related problems (LaBrie et al, 2011;Li et al, 2013;Sabel et al, 2004;Shope et al, 2003;Shults et al, 2009;Tomas Dols et al, 2010;Zakrajsek and Shope, 2006).…”

“…Older students-and students who at Time 1 reported DAD, drank more alcohol, and had less disapproving injunctive norms for a typical student-were more likely to report DAD at Time 2. The fi ndings add further support to cross-sectional data demonstrating that normative beliefs are associated with DAD intentions and behavior (Armitage et al, 2002;LaBrie et al, 2011).…”

“…Contrary to previous work (LaBrie et al, 2011), membership in a fraternity or sorority was not associated with DAD. Data for the present study came from a college at which DAD is discouraged among fraternity/sorority students by providing group transport to off-campus fraternity/sorority-sponsored social events, the locations of which are kept undisclosed.…”
