Water levels and water quality of open borehole wells in fractured bedrock are flow‐weighted averages that are a function of the hydraulic heads and transmissivities of water contributing fractures, properties that are rarely known. Without such knowledge using water levels and water quality data from fractured bedrock wells to assess groundwater flow and contaminant conditions can be highly misleading. This study demonstrates a cost‐effective single packer method to determine the hydraulic heads and transmissivities of water contributing fracture zones in crystalline bedrock wells. The method entails inflating a pipe plug to isolate sections of an open borehole at different depths and monitoring changes in the water level with time. At each depth, the change in water level with time was used to determine the sum of fracture transmissivities above the packer and then to solve for individual fracture transmissivity. Steady‐state wellbore heads along with the transmissivities were used to determine individual fracture heads using the weighted average head equation. The method was tested in five wells in crystalline bedrock located at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. The single packer head and transmissivity results were found to agree closely with those determined using conventional logging methods and the dissolved oxygen alteration method. The method appears to be a simple and cost‐effective alternative in obtaining important information on flow conditions in fractured crystalline bedrock wells.

Hydrogeochemical environment is of critical importance for the environment-friendly operation of underground oil storage caverns. The construction of underground oil storage caverns usually has an impact on the hydro-environment. The characterization and analysis of the hydrogeochemical environment can provide information on the relation between construction and hydro-environment. The quality of water samples was detected and analyzed to determine the chemical type in an underground oil storage cavern in China. The water samples are classi ed using principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The source and proportion of seepage water into the storage caverns are determined with end member mixing calculation. The results show that the chemical type of groundwater is mainly HCO 3 + Cl − Na type, and the two dominant factors affecting the evolution of hydrogeochemical content are rock dissolution and groundwater seepage. All water samples can be catalogued as seepage water, water curtain water, X River water and background water. The water curtain water can fully penetrate into the ground to provide containment for the storage caverns, and the water curtain system has a good performance and can basically cover the project area. Most of the seepage water into the storage caverns comes from water curtain water and X River water, while the proportion of background water is relatively low. The construction of underground oil storage caverns affects the groundwater ow regime by changing the directions of groundwater ow around the caverns. This study showcases the use of hydrogeochemical analysis in depicting the interplay between surface water and groundwater for underground rock engineering.

The study of karstic aquifers is a challenge because of their heterogeneous and anisotropic nature; the groundwater flow in these systems often cannot be explained using Darcian theory. Many techniques (direct and indirect) have been used for the characterization of karstic aquifers. Dissolved oxygen alteration method (DOAM) consists in injecting air into wells and tracing the evolution of this parameter over time; this practice offers advantages because it is cheap and harmless. Previous experiences show acceptable results in the identification of fractures and preferential flow in heterogeneous aquifers. The air injection used during the drilling process (rotary perforation with air cleaning) could be used as a tracer. This research monitored the physical parameters in groundwater after drilling wells, especially the dissolved oxygen. Besides, karstic zones have been identified using video surveys in drilling wells. Finally, the results using the DOAM method were contrasted with the physical evidence of karstic zones to compare the technique's accuracy. Results show that DOAM offers a qualitative approach to the evidence of karstic zones and preferential groundwater flow. DOAM can be considered as a useful choice to study the karstification influence on the aquifer groundwater flow and transport in karstic aquifers. The identification of these zones areis important for the design of supply and wastewater projects; therefore, this approach represents an improvement in the wells' design process in aquifers with similar conditions.
