Identifying Critical Process Variables in Poly(ethylene Terephthalate) Melt Spinning 1

Abstract: A quantitative procedure for identifying critical operating conditions and material properties for the melt spinning of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is considered. The method is based on the experimental observation that for vitrified polymers like polystyrene and PET spun at speeds below 3000 m/minute, the molecular orientation of the as-spun fiber is uniquely determined by σ L , the spinline stress at the glass transition temperature. Using a constant tension model that predicts σ L , a sen… Show more

“…where Q is the polymer mass flow rate, D is the filament fiber diameter, V is the filament fiber mean velocity in the spinning direction, and ρf is the specific density of the polymer. As the polymer density varies with polymer temperature, the following correlation was also introduced: ρf=1.356(5×104T) where T is the polymer temperature.…”

“…In the working process of melt spinning machine, the diameter of spinning can be used to evaluate the fiber structure of crystallinity and orientation degree, so as to change the internal quality of fiber [1]. When the diameter variation is small, the spinning quality is more uniform.…”

“…Gupta et al [2] described influence of the speed of a metering pump on throughput rates. Dutta et al [3] used various materials, throughput rates, spinning temperatures, quench air speeds, quench air temperatures, and take-up speeds to yield different properties of as-spun fibers. Ziabicki [4] suggested that the process parameters acting on properties of as-spun fibers include the chemical compositions, molecular structures and physical behaviors of materials; spinning temperatures, dimensions and number of spinneret orifices; and throughput rates, take-up speeds, quench air temperatures, and lengths of spinning paths.…”
