“…Indeed, whilst there have been numerous biological investigations of A. lupus in the waters off northern Russia (Pavlov & Novikov, 1993), Iceland (e.g., Gunnarsson et al, 2019;J onsson, 1982) and from the north-west Atlantic (e.g., Nelson & Ross, 1992;Templeman, 1986), and other studies relating to aquaculture potential (e.g., Desjardins et al, 2007;Le François et al, 2002), there have been comparatively few biological studies of A. lupus in the North Sea (Liao & Lucas, 2000a, 2000b. Whilst trawl survey data can identify some important areas for A. lupus in the North Sea (e.g., Ellis, 2015;Probst et al, 2021; present study), these data are from trawlable grounds and more detailed descriptions of preferred and critical habitats in this area are lacking. Additionally, some life-history stages of A. lupus prefer harder substrates, which are not sampled effectively in most trawl surveys, to minimize gear damage.…”
