Identifying concert halls from source presence vs room presence

Abstract: Identification of concert halls was studied to uncover whether the early or late part of the acoustic response is more salient in a hall's fingerprint. A listening test was conducted with auralizations of measured halls using full, hybrid, and truncated impulse responses convolved with anechoic symphonic music. Subjects identified halls more reliably based on differences in early responses rather than late responses, although varying the late response had more effect on acoustic parameters. The results suggest… Show more

“…The early part of the RIR, which includes the direct sound and early reflections, can be assumed to contain the most important perceptual information about the acoustic space. As opposed to the late part, the central role of the early part is supported by its significance in the identification of the acoustic space [15]. This is why it is reasonable to emphasize the early part of the response through directionally accurate reproduction.…”

“…This aspect is linked to psychocaoustics, as the early part of the RIR is perceptually more important than the late reverberation [15].…”

“…Accordingly,a ttributes such as proximity, distance and also the size of space are common terms related to auditory experience of being close to the performers. Attributes source presence and room presence have been used by Kahle [14] and also advocated by Haapaniemi and Lokki [11]. Source presence is associated with intimacy, whereas room presence is more related to spatial impression and reverberance.…”

“…As an alternative technique to binaural rendering, 3,16 this method eliminates several shortcomings related to binaural audio schemes 22 such as the lack of externalization and the subsequent difficulty in assessing spatial acoustics. 13 SDM has been successfully applied in the assessment of perceptual qualities of concert halls, 23,24 as well as in evaluating small-sized spaces, e.g., studio control rooms. 25 The applicability of SDM in automotive environments has been recently investigated and a recommendation was proposed.…”
