Identifying and treating plantar warts

Abstract: This article aims to help health practitioners to identify plantar warts, and to provide information on available treatments. The efficacy of various treatments is inconclusive. Topical treatments are recommended instead of other often costly and sometimes unsuccessful treatments such as cryotherapy. Improved education and self-management are encouraged to minimise spread of the virus and to ease discomfort.

“…Salicylic acid dissolves keratinocytes and desquamates the horny layer of skin. Cantharidin degenerates the desmosomal plaque, leading to detachment of tonofilaments from desmosomes by activating or releasing neutral serine proteases 16 . This process leads to acantholysis, intraepidermal blistering, and nonspecific lysis of skin 17 .…”

“…However, the disadvantages of this procedure are that it is very painful and difficult to tolerate. Currently, numerous other therapeutic options for plantar warts exist, such as surgical excision, salicylic acid, carbon‐dioxide (CO 2 ) lasering, and so on 5,6. Como hay 7 artículos en los que coincide el descriptor "cryotherapy" con el de "laser", el total de artículos utilizados pasa a ser 39.…”
