Identified vulnerability contexts for a paddy production assessment with climate change in Bali, Indonesia

Abstract: Indonesia is one of the countries that is most vulnerable to climate change. As a small Indonesian island, Bali is likely to also be affected by climate change impacts, including rising sea levels, drought, and flooding, which will also impact on its paddy production. This paper shows how the focus area of vulnerability assessments in Bali has been identified, based on multiple assessments including literature reviews, statistical assessment, stakeholder and policy assessment, and interviews with farmers. “…Being one of the wettest places on Earth, the Maritime Continent (MC) separates the Indian Ocean from the Pacific and encompasses the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, among others. This region experiences significant extreme precipitation (Hai et al., 2017; Warlina & Guinensa, 2019), which, combined with the high vulnerability of the local population (Abd Majid et al., 2019; Cabrera & Lee, 2020; Karki, 2019; Takama et al., 2017), can lead to severe consequences. An accurate prediction of extreme precipitation in the MC is therefore of crucial importance for society.…”

“…The simulations of the climate change scenario indicate that rising temperatures endanger agricultural production and farmers' wealth with negative impacts on ecosystem services. Several studies confirm that climate change is a significant and growing threat to livelihoods and particularly food security [13,121,122]. The simulation results further show that significantly higher incomes can be expected in the IRA scenario compared with the BAU scenario under climate change.…”

“…This result gains special importance for subsistence farmers in developing countries. These farmers are particularly vulnerable as they frequently lack assets and flexibility to cope with the impacts that climate change has on agricultural productivity [121][122][123]. Hence the findings stress the importance of agroforests like the illipe rubber mix as a safety net in the light of the ongoing climate change as they contribute to increased income, risk diversification, and resilience for small-scale farmers [18,96,106] The simulations further demonstrate that climate change negatively affects biodiversity, but higher levels can be expected in the IRA scenario, which again underlines the role of agroforests in conserving biological diversity [67,113,115].…”

“…Dalam adaptasi perubahan iklim, ada dua jenis kerentanan: kerentanan hasil dan kerentanan kontekstual (Adger et al, 2004;Takeshi Takama et al, 2017). Penelitian ini menggunakan kerentanan hasil berupa model proyeksi perubahan iklim dan data produksi.…”
