We have commenced a multi-year program, the Caltech-NRAO Stripe 82 Survey (CNSS), to search for radio transients with the Jansky VLA in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 region. The CNSS will deliver five epochs over the entire ∼270 deg 2 of Stripe 82, an eventual deep combined map with a rms noise of ∼40 µJy and catalogs at a frequency of 3 GHz, and having a spatial resolution of 3. This first paper presents the results from an initial pilot survey of a 50 deg 2 region of Stripe 82, involving four epochs spanning logarithmic timescales between one week and 1.5 years, with the combined map having a median rms noise of 35 µJy. This pilot survey enabled the development of the hardware and software for rapid data processing, as well as transient detection and follow-up, necessary for the full 270 deg 2 survey. Data editing, calibration, imaging, source extraction, cataloging and transient identification were completed in a semi-automated fashion within six hours of completion of each epoch of observations, using dedicated computational hardware at the NRAO in Socorro, and custom-developed data reduction and transient detection pipelines. Classification of variable and transient sources relied heavily on the wealth of multi-wavelength legacy survey data in the Stripe 82 region, supplemented by repeated mapping of the region by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). 3.9 +0.5 −0.9 % of the few thousand detected point sources were found to vary by greater than 30%, consistent with similar studies at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Multi-wavelength photometric data and light curves suggest that the variability is mostly due to shock-induced flaring in the jets of AGN. Although this was only a pilot survey, we detected two bona fide transients, associated with an RS CVn binary and a dKe star. Comparison with existing legacy survey data (FIRST, VLA-Stripe 82) revealed additional highly variable and transient sources on timescales between 5-20 years, largely associated with renewed AGN activity. The rates of such AGN possibly imply episodes of enhanced accretion and jet activity occurring once every ∼40,000 years in these galaxies. We compile the revised radio transient rates and make recommendations for future transient surveys and joint radio-optical experiments.

We investigate the clustering properties of 45441 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and 3493 radio-loud quasars (RLQs) drawn from a joint use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at 20 cm (FIRST) surveys in the range 0.3 < z < 2.3. This large spectroscopic quasar sample allow us to investigate the clustering signal dependence on radio-loudness and black hole (BH) virial mass. We find that RLQs are clustered more strongly than RQQs in all the redshift bins considered. We find a real-space correlation length of r 0 = 6.59 +0.33 −0.24 h −1 Mpc and r 0 = 10.95 +1.22 −1.58 h −1 Mpc for RQQs and RLQs, respectively, for the full redshift range. This implies that RLQs are found in more massive host haloes than RQQs in our samples, with mean host halo masses of ∼ 4.9 × 10 13 h −1 M and ∼ 1.9 × 10 12 h −1 M , respectively. Comparison with clustering studies of different radio source samples indicates that this mass scale of 1 × 10 13 h −1 M is characteristic for the bright radio-population, which corresponds to the typical mass of galaxy groups and galaxy clusters. The similarity we find in correlation lengths and host halo masses for RLQs, radio galaxies and flat-spectrum radio quasars agrees with orientation-driven unification models. Additionally, the clustering signal shows a dependence on black hole (BH) mass, with the quasars powered by the most massive BHs clustering more strongly than quasars having less massive BHs. We suggest that the current virial BH mass estimates may be a valid BH proxies for studying quasar clustering. We compare our results to a previous theoretical model that assumes that quasar activity is driven by cold accretion via mergers of gas-rich galaxies. While the model can explain the bias and halo masses for RQQs, it cannot reproduce the higher bias and host halo masses for RLQs. We argue that other BH properties such as BH spin, environment, magnetic field configuration, and accretion physics must be considered to fully understand the origin of radio-emission in quasars and its relation to the higher clustering.

This paper presents the Hubble diagram (K-z relation) for FIRST (Faint Images of the Radio Sky at 20 cm) radio sources identified in the Boötes and Cetus fields. The correlation between the K magnitude of the FIRST-NDWFS sample and the photometric redshifts found to be linear. The dispersion about the best fit line is given by 1.53 for the whole sample and 0.75 at z > 1. The paper also presents a composite K-z diagram of FIRST radio sources and low-frequency selected radio samples with progressively fainter flux-density limits (3CRR, 6C, 7CRS and the EIS-NVSS sample). The majority of FIRST radio sources lie fainter than the no evolution curve (3 L galaxies) probably highlighting the fact that the galaxy luminosity is correlated with the radio power.
