Identification of the reinforcing steel's corrosion state in RC beams based on electrochemical sensor

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to present a novel five-electrode electrochemical corrosion sensor. Health degradation by the corrosion of steel in civil engineering is a persistent problem. Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, including embedded sensors, can greatly improve the quantification of the steel corrosion information, which can lead to promote assessments of structural safety and serviceability. To integrate the corrosion monitoring system in future, the corrosion sensor and the moni… Show more

“…Cement-based composite filled with conductive particles (carbon black and nickel particles, etc.) is one kind of the composites with piezoresistivity, which is a new generation of strain sensor material to be used in structural health monitoring for infrastructures (Han et al, 2009a;Li et al, 2006;Qiao et al, 2011). The piezoresistivity mechanism of composites filled with conductive particles has been demonstrated based on the tunnel effect theory, which describes the relationship between the resistance and the width of a tunnel resistor (formed by two adjacent but separated conductive fillers) (Simmons, 1963).…”

“…The top layer of the rebar behaves as an electrode composed of cathodes and anodes that are interlinked over the rebar surface electronically. The associated cathodic and anodic reactions occur throughout this rebar surface [7]. To support this, the aqueous medium of pore water inside the concrete facilitates the reaction as it consists of some complex electrolytes.…”

“…The parameter b derived from the constant phase element (CPE) reflects the deviation degree of the capacitive characteristic of the double layer from the pure capacitance. Considering this obstacle, some modified algorithms have developed [25,28,29]. However, the accuracy of the parameters identified by the algorithms mentioned above, especially the Warburg impedance, directly depend on the time length of the response.…”
