Identification of the Novel 7-Methyl-6-octadecenoic Acid inHolothuria mexicana

Abstract: The phospholipid fatty acid composition of Holothuria mexicana was investigated, and the novel 7-methyl-6-octadecenoic acid was identified. Structural characterization was accomplished by means of pyrrolidide derivatization and total synthesis. Other interesting phospholipid fatty acids in H. mexicana were 7-eicosenoic acid, 13-tricosenoic acid, 7-methyl-6-hexadecenoic acid, and 2-hydroxy-15-tetradecenoic acid.

“…Stearic acid was the dominant SFA in tubules (15.56%), internal organs (14.18%) and body wall (15.43%) phospholipids, followed by palmitic acid (8.67%) in tubules. Similar results have been reported for phospholipids in H. mexicana where stearic and palmitic acids were the most abundant SFAs (Carballeira et al, 1996).…”

“…These 2-hydroxy fatty acids have been previously reported in low amounts (0.5-1.2%) in the phospholipid fatty acids of the holothurian Holothuria mexicana (Carballeira, Cruz, & Sostre, 1996), while high amounts of OH 24 : 1 (10.5-14.1%) have been detected in four holothurians of the abyssal eastern North Pacific (Drazen et al, 2008).…”

“…A new fatty acid, 7-methyl-6-octadecenoic acid, has also been discovered (Carballeira et al, 1996). The fatty acid compositions of sea cucumbers in markedly different habitats such as coastal regions of the Sea of Okhotsk, which are completely covered by drift ice during the coldest part of the year, are of great interest.…”
