This study analyzes the role of the Sorting Hat in structuring the identity of the characters in the Harry Potter series written by J. K. Rowling. In the different stages of adolescence, one explores and re-establishes one's identity. One's sense of identity is determined by the commitments made regarding personal and social traits. However, it is difficult to establish a concrete identity formation process theory that is communicable to adolescents. In Harry Potter, the characters' identities are reflected upon the Sorting Hat and are continuously molded throughout the book. The Sorting Hat provides nurturing experiences based on temperament. Based primarily on their temperament, it sorts the students into four houses, each with their own distinct characteristics. Once sorted, the houses become the living and learning communities in which the students share the same dormitory and classes until their graduation. Within the community, the students seek connections, supportive relationships, and understanding within the group. The taking on of the group identity is an explanatory variable in the formation of individual identity. The Sorting Hat provides the students with stability and a safe boundary. After being sorted based on their temperament, the inexperienced and immature adolescents can explore different options under the guidance of the Hat before making a definite commitment. By presenting them with an appropriate environment (such as a mentor, friend, or family member), the Hat further shapes their identity and integrates the identity elements ascribed in the beginning. By providing experiences and interactions based on their unique temperament and environment, the Sorting Hat plays a crucial role in establishing the students' identities. The Sorting Hat can be an ideal model for finding one's identity during adolescence.

RESUMEN:Considerado tradicionalmente exclusivo de la sociedad japonesa, el fenómeno hikikomori o aislamiento social, se ha ido extendiendo en los últimos años a otros países desarrollados de Occidente. Desde una perspectiva filosófico-educativa y, por tanto, a partir del análisis crítico de textos, este trabajo intenta dar respuesta a lo que muchos autores consideran ya una epidemia. Mostraremos, por un lado, que el motivo principal para la aparición de este fenómeno en Japón será el fuerte conflicto existente entre una sociedad individualista y una tradición cultural colectivista aún muy presente. Por otro lado, comprobaremos que este conflicto también está empezando a producirse en Occidente gracias al ideal cada vez más colectivista que las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) ofrecen. Consecuentemente, los efectos en Occidente y en Japón empiezan a ser similares. Como conclusión, defenderemos la recuperación de una educación para el desarrollo de la subjetividad que intente superar dicho conflicto.PALABRAS CLAVE: Japón; fenómeno hikikomori; TIC; filosofía de la educación. ABSTRACT:Traditionally considered as unique to Japan, the hikikomori phenomenon has been spreading in recent years to other developed countries in the Western world. From a philosophical-educational perspective, and thus by means of the critical analysis of texts, this paper tries to tackle what is already considered an epidemic by many authors. We will show, on the one hand, that the main reason for the occurrence of this phenomenon in Japan is a strong conflict between an individualistic society and a, still very present, collectivistic cultural tradition. On the other hand, we will verify that the same conflict is beginning to occur in the Western world thanks to the growing collectivistic ideal offered by information and communication technologies (ICT). Consequently, the effects in the Western world and in Japan are becoming similar. As a conclusion, we support the recovery of an education for subjectivity development that tries to overcome this conflict.
