Identification of thaumatin‐like protein and aspartyl protease as new major allergens in lettuce (Lactuca sativa)

Abstract: Two new major lettuce allergens-a thaumatin-like protein and an aspartyl protease-have been identified and characterized. These allergens may be used to improve both diagnosis and treatment of lettuce-allergic patients.

“…Lettuce LTP was found to be the major allergen in our series, supporting previous reports [13]. However, while this LTP was recognized in 80% of lettuce-allergic patients, peach LTP was recognized in an even higher proportion and Abbreviations: CEFA, cofactor-enhanced food allergy; NSAID, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.…”

“…LTP has been identified as the cause of IgE-mediated anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity in two studies of lettuce allergy via ingestion (Bascones et al, 2009;San Miguel-Moncín et al, 2003). Another allergen that could be involved in pollen-food syndrome is the thaumatin-like protein (TLP), which has also been identified as an allergen in lettuce (Munoz-Garcia et al, 2013).…”

“…There was no information on atopic diathesis for either of the patients . Of course, it is possible that the patch test gave a negative result because of poor quality of the lettuce used for testing, but another possibility is that the immediate allergy, which is caused by proteinaceous allergens, presented as dermatitis or exacerbated a pre‐existing dermatitis . On the other hand, Oliwiecki et al.…”
