Identification of terpenes and essential oils by means of static headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry

Abstract: Static headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (SHS GC-IMS) is a relatively new analytical technique that has considerable potential for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, SHS GC-IMS was used for the identification of the major terpene components of various essential oils (EOs). Based on the data obtained from 25 terpene standards and 50 EOs, a database for fingerprint identification of characteristic terpenes and EOs was generated utilizing SHS GC-IMS for authenticity… Show more

“…Nowadays, IMS applications in food composition cover a wide variety of substances (e.g., lipids, peptides, phenolic compounds, terpenes, etc.) [44,45,46,47], including allergens [48], and samples (e.g., flours, olive oil, mushrooms, etc.) [48,49,50].…”

“…The compound name, CAS number, molecular formula, molecular mass, retention index, retention time, and drift time are listed in Table 2. As product ions pass through the drift region, adducts formed between the analyzed ions and neutral molecules (such as dimers and trimers), where the high mobility of a single compound resulted in multiple signals being observed [34]. Because of the presence of monomers and dimers, the compounds of nonanal, eucalyptol, octanal, benzaldehyde, heptanal, 2-heptanone, 1-hexanol, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, furfurol, hexanal, 2-pentanone, isobutanol, ethyl acetate, 2-butanone, and 3-methyl butanoic acid appeared in two peaks.…”

“…Once the time of capture has elapsed, the bar is washed with distilled water, dried and then submitted to direct thermal desorption in a gas chromatography device [64]. HS-SPME sampling has been a widely utilized method for collecting VOCs from different materials, such as grains at different conditions, as healthy grains [65], grains damaged by insects [66], grains infected with fungus [67,68] as well as from nectar [69], nuts [70], intact leaves or those affected by herbivory [71,72,73,74], bark [75], flowers [41,73,76,77], essential oils [78], roots [79], fresh fruits [80], insect excrement [74], whole plants [81], living insects [82], and more examples which can be found in the available literature.…”
