Identification of Short and Long‐Lived Atmospheric Trace Gases From IASI Space Observations

Abstract: In recent years, major progress has been made in measuring weakly absorbing atmospheric trace gases from high spectral resolution space observations. In this paper, we apply the so‐called whitening transformation on spectra of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, and show that it allows removing most of the climatological background from spectra, leaving a residual that contains those spectral signatures that depart from normality. These can subsequently be attributed to changes in the abundance o… Show more

“…105 HONO can be found and plays an important role in soil, atmosphere, and space. 106,107 It is also of particular interest to theoretical chemistry, and hence, a large number of theoretical studies have been carried out. “…Recently, a transformation of the spectral channels, referred to as whitening, has been applied for the first time to the IASI spectra and allowed the identification of several trace gases that have never been detected before with nadir satellite sounders 48 . The whitening is similar to the HRI concept in that it removes most of the climatological background of the analyzed spectra (Eq.…”

“…Thanks to the continuous coverage across the thermal infrared spectrum offered by IASI (645-2760 cm −1 ) combined with a fairly high spectral resolution (0.5 cm −1 , apodized) and a low radiometric noise, the detection of a large suite of atmospheric trace gases has been made possible [65]. For an increasing number of them, (quasi-)global distributions of their atmospheric abundance are being derived from IASI spectra using fast retrieval methods.…”
