Abstract. Bahuwa IC, Lamondo D, Katili AS. 2022. Short Communication: Papaya (Carica papaya) seed extract test against Spodoptera litura mortality. Cell Biol Dev 6: 1-5. This study aims to determine the effect of papaya (Carica papaya L.) seed extract on mortality, the most influential concentration of papaya seed extract, Lethal Concentration (LC50) 24 hours, and Lethal Time (LT50) 24 hours armyworm (Spodoptera litura Fabricius, 1775) larvae instar III. The research was carried out at the Biology Department, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, Indonesia, in June 2021. The method used was an experiment with a Completely Randomized Design consisting of 9 treatments and 3 replications, there are A (aquadest control), B (CMC control), C (1 ppm), D (50 ppm), E (100 ppm), F (200 ppm), G (400 ppm), H (800 ppm), and I (1600 ppm). The data were analyzed by probit analysis LC50, LT50, and One Way Anova. The results showed that the LC50 value was at a dose of 489 ppm. The value of LT50 24 hours at a concentration of 1600 ppm is 10.61 hours, with the fastest time to kill 50% of armyworm larvae. Papaya seed extract affects the mortality of armyworm larvae; the higher the concentration, the less time it takes to kill 50% of the larvae.

Uncontrolled blood glucose level of diabetic people can lead to the production of excessive Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) as the trigger of lipid peroxidation. Antioxidant can defend the human body from overreacting to lipid peroxidation. The study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of Spirulina platensis and sea cucumber Stichopus hermanii based on the number of blood serum and liver malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes' activity of red blood cells in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. A group of Sprague Dawley rats (n=3) were the normal group (aquadest 2 mL/day, p.o.) and group of DM, Sp (S. platensis 81 mg/kg body weight; p.o.), Tr (S. hermanii 284 mg/kg body weight; p.o.), (Combination S. platensis 81 mg/kg + S. hermanii 284 mg/kg body weight; p.o.) prior to a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg body weight; i.p.). The results showed that S. platensis, sea cucumber (S. hermanii), and the mixture could suppress rats' body weight by 2-7%. The MDA concentration of liver organ of rats prior to STZ administration increased. However, the STZ administration did not significantly increase MDA concentration of blood serum and decreased activity SOD and CAT of red blood cells in the normal group for 14 days. This study concluded that Spirulina platensis demonstrated antioxidant activity indicated by the reduction of MDA level in the liver of diabetic rats induced by STZ (50 mg/kg body weight; i.p.).

“…Blood glucose levels while fasting at the end of the study in the sea cucumber and spirulina-feeding group with values not significantly different from the normal wound control group with a significant decrease, namely the golden sea-cucumber-feeding group of 77.16% and the gama-feeding group of 77.05%, which is suspected to be related to the content of the active substance in these preparations. According to [9] and [10] golden sea cucumber extract contains steroids, saponins, alkaloids and triterpenoids and has antioxidant activity through inhibition of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). Likewise with the spirulina-feeding group which had a decrease of 67.68% (the spirulina-feeding group of golden sea cucumbers) and 70.88% (the spirulina-feeding group of gama sea cucumbers), spirulina ethyl acetate extract has antioxidant activity through inhibition of DPPH and contains active substances of phenolic compounds, triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and saponins.…”

Previous study showed that sea cucumber and spirulina had an antioxidant activity and antihyperglycemic activity. Sea cucumbers contain a cell growth factor that is useful in wound healing. This research aimed to determine the activity of sea cucumber and spirulina in decreasing the fasting blood glucose and wound healing process in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The antihyperglycemic activity and wound healing test were done to experimental rats that have been conditioned with diabetic wound. 2840 mg/kg body weight of liquid preparation of sea cucumber methanol extract and 81 mg/kg body weight of spirulina extract were given through oral gavage and sea cucumber methanol extract was given topically once a day. The results showed that group of golden sea cucumber orally-topically had the best antihyperglycemic activity with the highest percentage reduction in blood glucose level while group of golden sea cucumber topically-spirulina orally had the best wound healing effect with the highest percentage of wound healing.
