Identification of quantitative trait loci controlling resistance to maize chlorotic dwarf virus

Abstract: Ineffective screening methods and low levels of disease resistance have hampered genetic analysis of maize (Zea mays L.) resistance to disease caused by maize chlorotic dwarf virus (MCDV). Progeny from a cross between the highly resistant maize inbred line Oh1VI and the susceptible inbred line Va35 were evaluated for MCDV symptoms after multiple virus inoculations, using the viral vector Graminella nigrifrons. Symptom severity scores from three rating dates were used to calculate area under the disease progres… Show more

“…Co-localization of the major virus resistance genes (Msv1, Mv1, Wsm1, Wsm2, Wsm3, and Mdm1) and viral dQTL were evident. Many of these viral dQTL, however, had very large effects, explaining between 25 to 50% of total variation, and might be better described as major genes (38,42,60,76). A recessive gene conferring resistance to southern corn leaf blight (SCLB), rhm, co-localized with SCLB dQTL on chromosome 6.…”

“…10. In this region, Wsm3, which confers resistance to WSMV, colocalizes with QTLs that confer resistance to MDMV, MCDV, MRFV, MNeSV, MSV, and MSpV (Dintinger, Verger, et al, 2005;Jones et al, 2011Jones et al, , 2004McMullen et al, 1994;Pernet, Hoisington, Dintinger, et al, 1999;Pernet, Hoisington, Franco, et al, 1999;Wang et al, 2007;Zambrano, Jones, Brenner, et al, 2014;. This region of the maize genome also carries loci for bacterial and fungal resistance (Redinbaugh & Pratt, 2008), as well as putative R genes Xiao et al, 2007).…”

“…By taking the virus' transmission mode into account, high efficiency inoculation conditions can be developed (Louie & Anderson, 1993;Zambrano et al, 2013). This approach has been effective for characterizing resistance QTLs under both greenhouse and field conditions (Table 8.2) ( Jones et al, 2004;Kyetere et al, 1999;Welz et al, 1998;Zambrano, Jones, Brenner, et al, 2014).…”
