The occurrence and distribution of seedling resistance genes and the presence of adult plant resistance to powdery mildew, was investigated in a collection of 155 Nordic bread wheat landraces and cultivars by inoculation with 11 powdery mildew isolates. Eighty-nine accessions were susceptible in the seedling stage, while 66 accessions showed some resistance. Comparisons of response patterns allowed postulation of combinations of genes Pm1a, Pm2, Pm4b, Pm5, Pm6, Pm8 and Pm9 in 21 lines. Seedling resistance was three times more frequent in spring wheat than in winter wheat. The most commonly postulated genes were Pm1a+Pm2+Pm9 in Sweden, Pm5 in Denmark and Norway, and Pm4b in Finland. Forty-five accessions were postulated to carry only unidentified genes or a combination of identified and unidentified genes that could not be resolved by the 11 isolates. Complete resistance to all 11 isolates was present in 18 cultivars. Adult plant resistance was assessed for 109 accessions after natural infection with a mixture of races. In all, 92% of the accessions developed less than 3-5% pathogen coverage while nine lines showed 10-15% infected leaf surface. The characterization of powdery mildew resistance in Nordic wheat germplasm could facilitate the combination of resistance genes in plant breeding programmes to promote durability of resistance and disease management.

Background. Powdery mildew is one of the harmful and destructive foliar diseases of cereal crops, caused by the fungus Вlumeria graminis (DC.) E.O. Speer f. sp. tritici Em. Marchal. Annual harvest losses may reach 10–15%, and up to 30% in an epidemic year. The VIR collection contains rich diversity of wheat, a valuable source of original material for wheat resistance breeding programs.The aim of this study was to generalize the results of long-term field and laboratory investigations on powdery mildew resistance in spring bread wheat of Nordic origin from the VIR collection and search for accessions resistant in all development phases.Materials and methods. Powdery mildew resistance was analyzed in 279 accessions originated from Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. The tests were performed from 1961 to 2019 against a natural population of the fungus in VIR’s experimental field (Pushkin, St. Petersburg). Field and laboratory studies were carried out in accordance with the guidelines developed by VIR.Results. The analysis of the field data on powdery mildew resistance in spring bread wheat accessions against the Pushkin population of the fungus showed that many Nordic accessions were resistant from 1970 till 1990. These data were retested in 2012–2013. One hundred and five accessions of old landraces and modern cultivars of Nordic origin were studied under field and laboratory conditions for their response to a natural population of the fungus. Accessions resistant in all phases of plant development were identified.Conclusion. Swedish cultivars ‘Sunnan’ (k-58177), ‘Canon’ (k-60992), ‘Sober’ (k-61080) ‘Dragon’ (k-61515) and ‘Dacke’ (k-63479) preserved their resistance to the powdery mildew population beginning from 1993. Spring bread wheat cultivars ‘SW Vals’ (k-64436), ‘SW Milljet’ (k-64434), ‘SW Estrad’ (k-64435), ‘SW Vinjet’ (k-64436), ‘Zebra’ (k-64707), ‘SW Kungsjet’ (k-66036), ‘SW Kronjet’ (k-66097) and ‘Boett’ (k66353) demonstrated adult and seedling resistance in the period from 2005 to 2019.

Chromosomal Location of Powdery Mildew Resistance Genes and Cytogenetic Analysis of Meiosis in Common Wheat Cultivar Meri

Common wheat cv. Meri was crossed to a set of 21 Chinese Spring monosomic lines to characterize resistance to powdery mildew and to determine the chromosomal location of the gene(s). Monosomic F1 plants were allowed to self-pollinate and to produce F2 seeds. Seedlings of F2 and F3 plants and their parents were inoculated with isolates Ns 2 and 9 of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici. Analysis of obtained data revealed that one major dominant gene conferring resistance is located on chromosome 1B of cv. Meri. The new gene is designated by symbol Pm28. On the basis of the trivalent configuration frequency (without univalent) at the 1st metaphase of meiosis it was found that two reciprocal translocations involving chromosomes 2A/5A and 5B/5D differentiate cv. Meri from cv. Chinese Spring. In the F1 monosomic hybrids, genes causing a decrease in pairing are found on chromosomes 4D and 6D, and genes enhancing pairing--on chromosomes 3A and 7B.
