Identification of novel murine parvovirus strains by epidemiological analysis of naturally infected mice

Abstract: Random-source DNA samples obtained from naturally infected laboratory mice (n=381) were evaluated by PCR and RFLP analysis to determine the prevalence of murine parvovirus strains circulating in contemporary laboratory mouse colonies. Mouse parvovirus (MPV) was detected in 77 % of samples, Minute virus of mice (MVM) was detected in 16 % of samples and both MVM and MPV were detected in 7 % of samples. MVMm, a strain recently isolated from clinically ill NOD-m chain knockout mice, was detected in 91 % of MVM-pos… Show more

“…Histologically, there was lymphohistiocytic inflammation in the kidneys and viral inclusions in splenic red pulp cells resembling hematopoietic progenitor cells. 8,94 Experimentally, disease can be produced by intracerebral inoculation of suckling mice with the more commonly studied immunosuppressive (MVMi) or prototype (MVMp) culture-adapted strains. 54 All parvoviruses of mice share several characteristics that make even subclinical, relatively nonpathogenic infections worrisome.…”

“…Seroprevalence for MMV in wild -mice populations is high (as high as 70% [77] ) and virus is present at high titers in multiple tissues (titers as high as 10 7 /ml). Furthermore, virus is excreted in the urine of infected animals and this could represent a signifi cant source of contamination where exposure to mice is not controlled.…”

“…The parvovirus subfamily contains the autonomous, vertebrate-specific viruses and includes the prototypic group member, Minute Virus of Mice (MVM) (Crawford, 1966;Kerr and Boschetti, 2006). Among the MVM variants, two, MVMm and MVMc, are common pathogens in mouse animal colonies (Besselsen et al, 2006). Two others -the fibrotropic (MVMp) and the lymphotropic (MVMi) -are the most commonly studied parvoviruses in a research setting (Bonnard et al, 1976;Crawford, 1966;McMaster et al, 1981).…”
