Identification of Nornicotine in Tobacco

Abstract: SENSITIVITYTests were made to determine the sensitivity of the method to small variations in procedure. It was found that the tartaric acid, bromine water, and dimethylglyoxime added could be decreased 25y0 or increased 100% without affecting the results. The ammonium hydroxide may be decreased 20% or increased 507, without effect. Approximately the same range of values holds for the sodium hydroxide. It was determined that

“…Cooling in the air at room temperature and without scratching, on the other hand, results in a broken type of solubility curve which differs from that in figure 1 only by the possession of a negative slope to the left of the eutectic point. The melting point curve to the left of the eutectic point under these conditions also shows a lower vertical displacement and then becomes very similar to the curve obtained by Bowen and Barthel (1944) for mixtures of nicotine and nornicotine dipicrates. While these last authors do not state the conditions under which crystallization occurred in their experiments, it is assumed that no effort was made to prevent the separation of liquid nornicotine dipicrate, and that, therefore, their results are comparable with those obtained in the present investigation from this standpoint.…”

“…Again, investigations with sugar cane (see Brink and Van Den Honert 1940;Rosenfeld 1937) show that a critical balance exists between supply of N and accumulation of sugar in cane. In environments where sunlight is low, decreased yields of sugar resulted if the N applications were too high (see Borden 1940Borden , 1944.…”
