Identification of Natural and Anthropogenic Drivers of Vegetation Change in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Megacity Region

Abstract: Identifying the natural and anthropogenic mechanisms of vegetation changes is the basis for adapting to climate change and optimizing human activities. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei megacity region, which is characterized by significant geomorphic gradients, was chosen as the case study area. The ordinary least squares (OLS) method was used to calculate the NDVI trends and related factors from 2000 to 2015. A geographic weighted regression (GWR) model of NDVI trends was constructed using 14 elements of seven categ… Show more

“…Although the OLS regression captured the relationships between RCU and the explanatory variables, nonstationary characteristics in the spatial RCU and the explanatory variables imply that the global model may fail to highlight the spatially variant patterns in the relationship [42]. Therefore, RCU was further analyzed by the GWR model, which is capable of reflecting the nonstationary characteristics in the relationship.…”

“…Moreover, the BTH urban agglomeration has developed dramatically into a national political, economic, and cultural center since the 1990s [42,43]. However, the continuous expansion of its urban agglomerations, especially Beijing and Tianjin, has led to complex problems in local ecosystems [44], which not only pose a threat to ecological security but may also substantially hinder regional sustainability development [45]. In fact, in the progress of development and the transformation of industry, it is widely accepted that great attention should be paid to the promotion of an excellent ecological environment, developing a green economy, and building a 'Two-Oriented Society' (i.e., a resource-saving and environment-friendly society).…”
