Identification of Multiple Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Genotypes in a Patient with Oral Condylomata Acuminata

Abstract: Oral condyloma acuminatum is a papillomatous lesion that is transmitted most often sexually and associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV). This report describes a case of a 30-year-old woman with multiple oral condylomata acuminata, located on the lateral edges and on the dorsum of the tongue. The incisional biopsy showed histological features compatible with those of condyloma acuminatum. E6 viral oncogene of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 33 was identified by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The les… Show more

“…HPV types 6 and 11 are typically labeled as low risk because infection with these types has low oncogenic potential and usually results in the formation of condylomata and low-grade precancerous lesions. Several treatment options are used to remove oral warts including electro or radiodissecation, laser surgery, cryotherapy, or surgical excision but no treatment is completely satisfactory; relapse is frequent and requires re-treatment [ 14 ]. The lesions of our patients were partially removed by laser surgery.…”

“…Condyloma acuminatum (venereal wart) is generally regarded as an sexually transmitted disease affecting the skin and mucous membranes of the anogenital tract. 29 Currently, it is accepted that oral condylomas can arise not only by oral sex but also by autoinoculation or as a result of maternal transmission. The first report on the presence of HPV particles in an oral condyloma lesion reported as an abstract in 1976 and published as a case report in 1980 by Gysland et al 30 Wysocki and Hardie first detected HPV DNA in an oral verruca lesion using electron microscopy.…”

“…These M-PCRs have a variety of formats but with a common aim of detecting and typing HPVs (10,11,21,23). Three consensus primer pairs simultaneously detected high-risk (for cervical carcinoma) HPV type 16 and HPV-18 and low-risk HPV-6 and HPV-11, and primer pairs for more than 40 other HPV types were used in developed consensus M-PCR.…”
