Identification of Loliolide with Anti-Aging Properties from Scenedesmus deserticola JD052

Abstract: Herein, different extracts of Scenedesmus deserticola JD052, a green microalga, were evaluated in vitro as a potential anti-aging bioagent. Although post-treatment of microalgal culture with either UV irradiation or high light illumination did not lead to a substantial difference in the effectiveness of microalgal extracts as a potential anti-UV agent, the results indicated the presence of a highly potent compound in ethyl acetate extract with more than 20% increase in the cellular viabi… Show more

“…In plants, (-)-loliolide serves as a defensive molecule against pathogens and herbivores and possesses allelopathic effects, such as germination and growth inhibition in other plants [39]. (-)-Loliolide has been shown to have several biological activities [40][41][42][43], but no studies on its anticancer effects have been reported. While research on the biological activities of Piper species has focused heavily on alkaloids, (-)-loliolide highlights the importance of investigating other secondary metabolites for potential benefits.…”

“…S. horneri contains bioactive compounds, such as fucoidan and loliolide, with promising bioactivities, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions [ 15 ]. In particular, loliolide, the phenolic compound known as one of the active ingredients of S. horneri , is reported to have a variety of functions, such as cell protection, anti-cancer, anti-aging, and anti-apoptosis activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Furthermore, many studies have suggested that S. horneri is a potential inhibitor of PM-induced inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and cell death [ 19 , 20 ].…”
