Identification ofDermacentorreticulatusTicks CarryingRickettsiaraoultiion Migrating Jackal, Denmark

Abstract: From a migrating golden jackal (Canis aureus), we retrieved 21 live male Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, a species not previously reported from wildlife in Denmark. We identified Rickettsia raoultii from 18 (86%) of the ticks. This bacterium is associated with scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy after tick bite syndrome among humans.

“…Also in France, new locations expand the documented distribution area of D. reticulatus. René-Martellet et al (2015) published the first findings on the Mediterranean island (Kjaer et al 2019), although 21 adult male D. reticulatus were found on a migrating Golden jackal (Canis aureus) in Denmark (Klitgaard et al 2017). However, this seems to be a rare case of diversion rather than an indication for a new established occurrence area of D. reticulatus.…”

“…We used primers for bacterial and parasitic tick-borne pathogens previously identified in the most common tick species, I. ricinus , from Scandinavia, and also included common tick-borne pathogens found throughout Europe 5 . To screen for different tick species, we used primers for I. ricinus , I. persulcatus , and D. reticulatus; tick species observed in various regions of Scandinavia 43 , 44 . All pathogens targeted in the PCR assays are listed in Table 1 .…”
