Identification of hemoglobin‐α and ‐β subunits as potential serum biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of ovarian cancer

Abstract: The development of new biomarkers for ovarian cancer is clearly necessary for the improved detection and monitoring of the disease. Surface enhanced laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) can be employed in the identification of differentially expressed proteins in cancer cells. The objective of this study was, then, to identify potential diagnostic serological biomarkers for ovarian cancer. We performed protein expression difference analyses of 45 serum samples using S… Show more

“…Hemoglobin alpha chain together with the beta chain has already been proposed as biomarkers for ovarian cancer [23]. Interestingly in this case, hemoglobin alpha chain was found to be the bovine form indicating that the glucose-non-responsive cells were absorbing more of this protein when grown in standard conditions with FCS in the media.…”

“…All these proteins have been identified by others as disease-associated markers. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36] We obtained a classification model that could distinguish between the diseased and the control subjects with high sensitivity and specificity. Because of the restriction of sample size, we assessed the performance of this model using a procedure of 10-fold cross validation.…”

“…Potential biomarkers for gastric carcinoma diagnosis were previously reported, including serum amyloid A (SAA) (7), which is also elevated in various types of cancer (9). However, in previous studies, a limited number of samples was used and there was an absence of information on the clinicopathological staging in the patients.…”
