Swine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory viral infection of pigs that has become enzootic in areas densely populated with pigs. Like other influenza A viruses, swine influenza virus (SIV) is genetically unstable and able to accumulate antigenic drifts and/or antigenic shifts. The pig is susceptible to both avian and human influenza viruses and can serve as an intermediate host in influenza virus ecology. Zoonotic agents may emerge in pigs following the modification of an established swine strain, adaptation of a strain of avian origin to the mammalian host, or reassortment between human and avian influenza viruses. Three different subtypes, H1N1, H3N2 and H1N2, are at present circulating in Europe. They differ from those found in North America and Asia and various lineages can be distinguished within each subtype. To date, European SIVs have not produced a global outbreak of influenza in humans but sporadic cases of SIV infection have been reported. This review presents a historical record of the genetic and antigenic evolution of SIVs in Europe. Our present understanding of the transmission of European SIVs from pigs to other animal species and to humans, together with the factors that limit inter-species transmission, is described.

Summary The prevalence of antibodies to influenza and respiratory coronaviruses among fattening pigs in Spain The presence of antibodies to two influenza viruses of the type A (H1N1 and H3N2) and to a porcine respiratory coronavirus was investigated in a study lasting a year. 735 blood serum samples were collected from 79 closed pig fattening farms in the province Segovia (Spain). Hemagglutination inhibition was used with influenza viruses. The percentage of positive results was 78.5 % and 62.5 % respectively for the serotypes H1N1 and H3N2. A clear reduction in the spread of antibodies was observed in the autumn. The ELISA technique was used with the porcine respiratory coronavirus. As antigen we used the antigenically related transmissible porcine gastroenteritis virus. Using this technique 87 % of the sera were positive. Some of these sera with representative ELISA values were confirmed by means of serum neutralisation and radioimmune precipitation of the viral proteins. The incidence of these antibodies remained unchanged over the whole year of the investigation. Zusammenfassung Prävalenz der Antikörper gegen die Influenza‐ und respiratorischen coronaviren bei Mastschweinen in Spanien Im Laufe eines Jahres wurde eine Untersuchung übeer die Präsenz von Antikörpern gegen zwei Influenzaviren Typ A (H1N1 und H3N2) und ein porzines respiratorisches Coronavirus angefertigt. In 79 Schweinemastbetrieben mit geschlossenem Zyklus in der Provinz Segovia (Spanien) Wurden 735 Blutserumproben entnommen. Für die INfluenzaviren wurde die Hämagglutinationshemmungstechnik angewendet. Deer Positivenprozentsatz lag bei 78,5% bzw. 62,5% für die Serotypen H1N1 und H3N2. Während des Herbstes wurde eine klare Abnahme der Antikörperverbreitung gegen beide Serotypen Festgestellt. Für das porzine respiratorische Coronavirus wurde die ELISA‐Technik angewender. Als Antigen setzten wir das antigenisch verwandte Virus der transmissiblen prozinen Gastroenteritis ein. Bei dieser Technik waren 87% der Seren positiv. Einige dieser Seren mit repräsentativen ELISA‐Werten wurden mittels Serummeutralisation unde Radioimmunpräzipitation der viralen Proteine bestätigt. Die Inzidenz dieser Antikörper blieb unveränderlich über das ganze Jahr hindurch bestehen. Résumé Se ha realizado, a lo largo de un año, un estudio sobre la presencia de anticuerpos frente a dos virus Influenza tipo A (H1N1 y H3N2) y un coronavirus respiratorio porcino. El muestreo se realizó sobre 735 sueros de cerdo pertenecientes a 79 granjas de ciclo cerrado de la provincia de Segovia (España). Para 10s virus Influenza se utilizó la técnica de inhibicón de la hemoaglutinación. El porcentaje de positivos fué del 78,5% y 62,5% para 10s serotipos H1N1 y H3N2, respectivamente. Se observó una Clara disminución de la prevalencia de anticuerpos frente a ambos en otoño. Para el coronavirus respiratorio porcino se usó la técnica ELISA.
