Identification of functional α2- and β-adrenergic receptors in mammalian spermatozoa

Abstract: These experiments provide the first good evidence that mammalian spermatozoa have both beta-adrenergic receptors, known to stimulate cAMP production by membrane-associated adenylyl cyclases (mACs), and alpha2-adrenergic receptors, known to inhibit cAMP production by mACs. “…Zinc is mostly present in sperm flagella and its concentration is negatively correlated with to sperm motility and velocity (Henkel et al 1999); its chelation oxidizes the sulfhydryl groups to disulfide bridges that stabilize and stiffen the outer dense fibers in flagellum (Calvin HI et al 1974), leading to increase in straight line velocity and progressive motility (Wroblewski et al 2003) and extending the fertile life span of bovine frozen-thawed spermatozoa (Pavlok 2000). Epinephrine modulates cAMP production, which stimulates sperm capacitation (Adeoya-Osiguwa et al 2006) and even capacitates sperm in presence of zinc chelators (Way and Killian 2002). Meanwhile, high dose of PHE (75µl/ml PHE), equivalent for (37.7µM penicillamin, 18.9 µM hypotaurine and 3µM epinephrine) didn't lead to improvement in fertilization and cleavage rates when compared to control.…”
