In this work, tensile and shear modulus, as well as Poisson's ratio of a woven orthotropic nanocomposite plate were determined from vibration data. Plates used in the experiment were 16 layers S2-glass/epoxy composite manufactured by vacuum assisted wet layup. The nanocomposite plate was obtained by adding 0%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 10% nanoclays in weight to the epoxy matrix. A Finite Element model of the composite plate combined with a gradient method was applied to obtain an approximate numerical solution to experimental data in order to estimate the mechanical properties. Two different modal procedures were employed: the Laser Anemometry and Hammer test. A modal analysis was made in both cases to determine structural mode shape and associated frequencies, modal and mechanical properties for different nanoclay composite plates, as well as assessing its sensitivity to Modal Analysis.

Using experimental data and numerical simulations, a new combined technique is presented for characterization of thin and thick orthotropic composite laminates. Four or five elastic constants, as well as ply orientation angles, are considered as the unknown parameters. The material characterization is first examined for isotropic plates under different boundary conditions to evaluate the method's accuracy. The proposed algorithm, so-called CPAM (Combined Programs of ABAQUS and MATLAB), utilizes an optimization procedure and makes simultaneous use of vibration test data together with their corresponding numerical solutions. The numerical solutions are based on a commercial finite element package for efficiently identifying the material properties. An inverse method based on particle swarm optimization algorithm is further provided using MATLAB software. The error function to be minimized is the sum of squared differences between experimental and simulated data of eigenfrequencies. To evaluate the robustness of the model's results in the presence of uncertainty and unwanted noises, a sensitivity analysis that employs Gaussian disorder model is directly applied to the measured frequencies. The results with high accuracy confirm the validity and capability of the present method in simultaneous determination of mechanical constants and fiber orientation angles of composite laminates as compared to prior methods.

In this study, an optimization procedure is proposed to find the optimum stacking sequence designs of laminated composite plates in different fiber angle domains for maximum buckling resistance. A hybrid algorithm combining genetic algorithm and trust region reflective algorithm is used in the optimization to obtain higher performance and improve the quality of solutions. As a novelty, Puck fiber and inter-fiber failure criteria are directly implemented to the optimization problems as nonlinear function constraints, which have allowed more consistent and feasible results. The performance of the hybrid algorithm is demonstrated by comparing with the individual performances of genetic and trust region reflective algorithms via test problems from the literature. Also, a study is performed to exhibit the effectiveness of the selected failure criterion as constraint among the other common criteria. The proposed procedure is used to solve many problems including various design considerations. The results indicate that reliable stacking sequence designs can be achieved in specific configurations even for the composite plates subjected to superior buckling loads when Puck physically based (3D) failure theory is considered as a first ply failure constraint in the buckling optimization.
